Open Water Snorkel Instructor Training Course (OWSITC)

Information for BSAC Members wishing to qualify

Aim
To train and qualify people as BSAC Open Water Snorkel Instructors.

Entry requirements
This event is open to BSAC Snorkelling or Full Members who:
(a) have an interest in teaching open water snorkelling to others.
(b) are holders of the BSAC Snorkel Instructor Certificate.
(c) are holders of the Ocean Snorkel Diver qualifications or are BSAC Sports Divers or above.
(d) BSAC Snorkel Lifesaver Award or recognised equivalent.
(e) Accept the terms of BSAC's policy with regard to Protection of Minors (see over).

Course Programme
This one-day course is designed to progress pool teaching skills into sheltered open water. The qualification will be awarded following submission of proof of 8 hours of open water snorkel teaching after the Course. Fees
The Course Fee is £50.00 per candidate. This fee will provide candidates with all instruction, Course Notes and a BSAC Instructor's Training Record book. Successful candidates will receive the BSAC Open Water Snorkel Instructor certificate and cloth badge once their record of 8 hours of open water training is accepted.

Fitness
All candidates will be required to present evidence of fitness in the form of:
a. Ocean Snorkel Divers should submit a completed BSAC 'Declaration of Fitness for Snorkelling' document
b. BSAC Sports Divers or above shold present a copy of their BSAC 'Self-declaration of Medical Fitness' to dive or a full medical certificate. Equipment
Candidates will be expected to provide their own Mask, Fins and Snorkel; appropriate open water protective clothing, weightbelt and buoyancy aid if used. Candidates should also bring a notebook and pen.

Making an Application
Download the Application Form and send it, with the £50.00 Course Fee (cheque payable to British Sub-Aqua Club, please) to Snorkel Bookings at BSAC HQ, at the address given. You are advised to submit your application as early as possible in advance of the event.

All applications will be acknowledged and joining instructions issued about two weeks before the course.

Results
On completion and submission of a record of 8 hours open water snorkel instruction to the BSAC Snorkel Chief Examiner, an Open Water Instructor number, cloth badge and A4 certificate will be issued. The Instructor may then teach and certify snorkelling members up to the level of Snorkel Dive Marshal, provided that they hold that qualification level themselves. A Snorkelling Instructor may not teach above the Snorkel Diver qualification level he/she holds him/herself.

BSAC's policy with regard to Protection of Minors
As the governing body for the sports of snorkelling and SCUBA diving, the British sub-Aqua Club ('BSAC') wishes to assure parents and guardians that all reasonable precautions will be taken to ensure the safety and wellbeing of young children and juveniles who participate in the activities of the BSAC. Accordingly, it is a policy of the BSAC that people convicted of criminals acts of a sexual or violent nature against, or otherwise involving children, may not be Members of the organisation and that, in particular, such persons will not have contact with young BSAC students in any form whatsoever. Additionally, and as a condition of Membership, the BSAC has instituted basic screening for criminal activity of this nature for all that wish to join the BSAC or renew their Membership. The BSAC reserves the right to follow up such declarations by asking for specific criminal record checks on this subject to is made with the relevant authorities.
