Open Water Snorkel Instructor Training Course (OWSITC)
Programme & Syllabus
AIM
To teach candidates how to progress pool teaching techniques into open water snorkelling activities in sheltered open water locations.
DURATION
One day.
ENTRY GRADE
This event is open to BSAC Snorkel Instructors or equivalent, who are BSAC members and wish to become qualified to teach open water snorkelling techniques. Candidates should also be qualified as BSAC Ocean Snorkel Diver, who has a Snorkel Lifesaver Award or equivalent.
INSTRUCTORS
This course must be lead by an approved Open Water Snorkel Instructor Trainer. Additional instructors must also be approved instructor trainers. Assistant Open Water Snorkel Instructor trainers may attend the course in order to gain their instructor approval for this level.
Ratio - One instructor to every twelve students for theory sessions. This ratio will need to be reduced to 1:3 for practical open water sessions.
FACILITIES
A suitable classroom for the theory lessons with teaching aids. An open water location with access to sheltered shallow and deep water for the practical sessions. Shore should have easy access for entries and exits.
APPROVAL
Approval by the Snorkel Chief Examiner must be obtained through HQ.
QUALIFICATION
On completion of this course and the submission of a written record of 8 hours of practical Open Water Snorkel instruction the candidate will receive the BSAC Open Water Snorkel Instructor Award, an Open Water Snorkel Instructor number, A4 Certificate, cloth badge and a certificate for their qualification record book. An OWSI is able to teach all levels of snorkelling up to the level, which they themselves hold below BSAC Snorkel Dive Marshal.
